A YAC is a Young Adult Carer aged 14-18 years old. Their needs and support they require is slightly different from their younger peers. Cheshire Young Carers listened what they were saying and responded with a brand-new programme – Team YAC.
Team YAC members engage in monthly activities to have a break from their caring role, meet other young adult carers and improve their interpersonal skills. The monthly activities offer the young carers a chance to grow in independence and confidence, as trips often involve using public transport to travel between venues. The older members are trusted with taking more of a leadership role, encouraging them to grow into self-sufficient young adults. Young adult carers are often presented with brand new experiences and opportunities, this in turn improves their wellbeing and quality of life. The group have recently tried bouldering, ice-skating, skiing and tackling the London underground.
This is the age at which young adults typically choose a career path. Team YAC engages with an ‘In To Work’ programme, in which the young people enjoy the chance to discover more about different job roles and responsibilities in different professional establishments. In the past the group have visited M&S Bank, The Everyman Theatre, and Manchester Hospital to learn about what goes on behind the scenes of these busy and highly successful organisations. The In-To-Work programme inspires and motivates the young adult carers and shows them that self-belief and determination can go a long way in the professional world.
