An extremely generous donation from Natural Retreats of two luxury lodges at their incredible Cornwall site gave a group of Cheshire young adult carers the chance to have a 5 day break in a beautiful part of the country

The young carers co-ordinated their week as a group, from organising meals to deciding which activities they wanted to do or places they wished to explore, it was all about increasing their independence with support of the Cheshire Young Carers team.

The group had a long journey (huge thanks to Cheshire Scouts for use of their minibus!) but it was so worth it.  Two of our YAC’s bravely and proudly cooked a lovely dinner of spaghetti bolognaise (the first time cooking for so many people) and then they all retreated for an early night ready for a busy week ahead.

The group made interesting visits to Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, bodyboarding lessons on Fistral Beach, eating out as a group and beach games, the group had an amazing week away with memories that will stay with them forever. Some of the young people conquered their fears about swimming in water, learned how to cook a meal and budgeting skills, and had more physical activity in 5 days than they would normally in a month – all whilst having fun!

Body-boarding in Cornwall has been such a huge hit with our YAC’s – only two had tried body-boarding before so it has been a massive learning curve, especially with the size of those waves!  The weather was fabulous and everybody got stuck in conquering huge waves, overcoming fears and generally having a fantastic experience working together and supporting one another.

Team YAC were lucky enough to go to Eden Project this week and they were treated to a fascinating site tour by the wonderful staff – they learnt about all of the different species of plants, the educational Eden Charity itself and did some reflection about the wonder of nature and the positive impact it can have on our well-being.
 

For the bravest of YAC’s there were adrenaline fuelled activities to test their nerve with Hangloose at Eden.  Afterwards the team wound down and played some evening beach games to round off the day.

A big shout-out and thanks to Greggs for fuelling the journey home – the YAC team took a stop off and a well deserved break during their journey.
