Children in Need has awarded a grant over 3 years to Cheshire Young Carers to help support the charity to provide increased access to its services. This includes respite and residential experiences that provide vital opportunities for young carers to form trusted friendship groups.

Graham Phillips, CEO commented “this is a really important boost to our efforts to support more young carers across Cheshire with structured interventions that have positive impact on the lived experience of young carers.”

The grant will essentially support an outreach worker who will work with local communities to identify and support children who are young carers.

Cheshire Young Carers provide a full range of support options that start with their school’s programme that helps schools identify pupils who are young carers, provides an assessment tool to measure the impact of the caring role on potential education performance and then provides a route into further support. Many young carers then take advantage of the respite opportunities on offer including residential experiences. All of this work is supported by a small, dedicated welfare team who provide advice and support when required.

There are estimated to be c40,000 children who are young carers in Cheshire with nearly 20,000 providing high levels of care.
